Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Tulsa team up to sell T-shirts to help tornado victims
Unlike Kevin Ware T-shirts being sold to profit off his horrible injury, this is an apparel sales idea that is easy to support.
Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Tulsa are teaming up on T-shirts to help benefit the victims of the tornadoes that caused massive damage in the state. At $19.99, the shirts bear the logos of the three major schools in the state with the phrase “OK Together” at the top. Proceeds will go to The United Way.
The link to buy one from the Oklahoma team store is here.
Here was the description of the shirt from Oklahoma’s site:
It’s the Oklahoma Standard. In times of need, our communities rally around each other with an outpouring of love and compassion. As a Cowboy, Hurricane and Sooner fan, you can do your part to help the Oklahomans that have been affected by the recent devastation by supporting those in need with this 2013 Disaster Relief Efforts tee. All proceeds from the sale of each tee will go to The United Way for disaster relief efforts in the affected areas to further the movement of recovery and restoration.

Tim Tebow’s name was used in EA Sports game, contradicting key NCAA argument

SBNation’s Patrick Vint had a great find, as he wrote about how Tim Tebow’s name was actually used for a play call in NCAA Football 10, a game by EA Sports.
Now, that last sentence might not seem like a big deal to you. But it contradicts one of the key arguments being set forth by the NCAA and EA Sports in a very important lawsuit brought by former UCLA basketball player Ed O’Bannon.
O’Bannon’s suit claims that the NCAA used the likenesses of players to sell things like DVDs and video games made by EA Sports, and players didn’t make anything off it. The NCAA and EA Sports tries to get around that by saying that no player names are used. Anyone who has played the games will tell you that when “QB #16″ for Michigan has the exact same attributes as Denard Robinson (and is playing in an exact video game replica of Michigan Stadium, in an exact replica of the Michigan uniform), for example, it’s pretty clear that player on the screen is supposed to be Denard Robinson. But EA Sports and the NCAA kept saying no names were used.
But apparently the highest profile name in college football the past few years was inserted into the game a few years ago, which makes that argument even more dubious than it already was.
As SBNation wrote, it took some digging to find Tebow’s name on one of the plays (the sixth and seventh plays listed on the image at the top), but one of their readers did it and the site confirmed it:
While the full formation name is shortened during gameplay, the full title is revealed in the Game Prep feature in Dynasty mode. The formation, with the quarterback in the shotgun and two running backs placed two yards ahead of him, was a formation commonly used by Florida during Tebow’s time in Gainesville.
Let’s look at NCAA chief legal officer Donald Remy’s comment on the suit from April 25:
“While the NCAA is still reviewing this filing, it appears to be more of the same – baseless theories supported only by inaccurate speculation aimed at destroying amateurism in college athletics.
“Plaintiffs have failed to put forth any actual facts in support of their claims.”
Schools and the NCAA destroyed amateurism in college athletics long ago by selling out anything and everything it could for a buck. Like, players’ likenesses in video games. Or realignment that most everyone who isn’t getting paid off hates. Or conference television networks. Or rights to “The Official Ladder of the NCAA Tournament.”
The Tebow mention isn’t proof that the lawsuit will be a winner, just that it pokes a huge hole in the ridiculous notion that because names aren’t used in the game that the actual NCAA players aren’t being used to make a profit. But it does seem like putting forth an actual fact to support the claims.
“Our agreement with EA Sports clearly prohibits the use of names and pictures of current student-athletes in their electronic games. We are confident that no such use has occurred,” NCAA spokesman Bob Williams said in 2009, the same year NCAA Football 10 came out, according to the NCAA’s timeline.
This lawsuit is a pretty scary thing for the NCAA. A loss could change the model of college athletics. The way the greed of the schools and the NCAA has grown, that might be for the best.

Oregon’s long forgotten J.J. Arrington faux pas means Ducks subject to NCAA repeat violator rules

Since 2003, running back J.J. Arrington had a full football career.
He had a 2,000-yard season for Cal, was drafted in the second round by the Arizona Cardinals, played four seasons with them and had two catches in a Super Bowl, was with Denver and Philadelphia after that but didn’t play due to knee issues, and was signed and released by the Las Vegas Locomotives of the UFL in the span of a few months in 2011.
A decade ago, Arrington was known for an incident in which he forged his father’s name and falsified the time on his letter of intent to beat the deadline under an Oregon coach’s watch according to the LA Times. Even though that was so long ago and Arrington went to Cal anyway, it still looms over the Ducks’ program.
The Register-Guard obtained a copy of the NCAA’s notice of allegations it sent Oregon in early December, regarding Oregon’s recruiting practices and its relationship with Willie Lyles. The notice of allegations confirmed that because of the long-ago Arrington ordeal, which resulted in a two-year probation handed down in 2004, the Ducks are subject penalties under the NCAA’s repeat violator rules.
These incidents never seem totally in a school’s past, do they?
The Register-Guard said the notice of allegations is almost identical to the summary disposition proposal sent to the NCAA last year, so there wasn’t a lot of new ground covered in the latest document. The Ducks met with the NCAA’s committee on infractions last month.
Given that, according to the Register-Guard, the notice of allegations points out that “all of the alleged violations … are considered to be potential major violations of NCAA legislation,” this is a nervous time for Oregon. The repeat offender classification won’t make the Ducks sleep easier, either.

Alabama and Texas A&M have a kickoff time for Sept. 14 showdown
Alabama and Texas A&M will play on Sept. 14, and it was announced that kickoff will be at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time on CBS.
That’s no surprise at all, considering that is the prime time slot for the SEC on CBS, and that is the premier game on the schedule for the 2013 season. We just wanted to post the video that Texas A&M produced in anticipation of the game and remind everyone again that college football is coming, soon. The season is less than 100 days away now.
There’s no matchup more worthy of looking ahead almost four months than Alabama trying to get revenge against the Aggies for its lone loss last season. And imagine how amped Kyle Field will be that afternoon.
Can’t wait.
Here’s the SEC on CBS schedule that has been announced so far:
Sept. 14, Alabama at Texas A&M, 3:30 p.m.
Oct. 19, SEC doubleheader, 12 p.m., 3:30 p.m.
Nov. 2, Georgia vs. Florida, 3:30 p.m.
Nov. 9, SEC doubleheader, 3:30 p.m., 8 p.m.
Nov. 29, Arkansas at LSU, 2:30 p.m.
Dec. 7, SEC championship, 4 p.m.

Former Rutgers QB can pursue lawsuit against EA Sports after winning appeal
Ed O’Bannon isn’t the only person to wonder why his likeness was one of the featured aspects of a video game being sold for $59.99, yet he wasn’t seeing any money off of it.
According to SNYRutgers.com, former Rutgers quarterback Ryan Hart can pursue a lawsuit against EA Sports after winning an appeal, which reversed the dismissal of his original lawsuit against the video game company for using his likeness without permission. Hart was Rutgers’ starting quarterback in 2004 and 2005.
This issue has already become a serious one for the NCAA, with the O’Bannon lawsuit still pending, and now the Hart lawsuit will bring more attention to the issue if he decides to keep battling EA Sports.
The lawsuit centers around what anyone who has played one of EA Sports’ college football games knows as a common fact: The players in the game don’t have the names, but they have all the other likenesses of the real players. That anyone would rule otherwise is intellectually dishonest, and the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals saw through it:
“The digital Ryan Hart does what the actual Ryan Hart did while at Rutgers: He plays college football, in digital recreations of college football stadiums, filled with all the trappings of a college football game,” Judge Joseph Greenaway said, according to SNYRutgers.com. “This is not transformative; the various digitized sights and sounds in the video game do not alter or transform the appellant’s identity in a significant way.”
Video game companies such as EA Sports argue that they can use likenesses under the First Amendment of free expression. A federal judge in 2011 ruled in EA Sports’ favor on that basis, but the appeal overturned it.
It’s hard to feel too bad for the NCAA or EA Sports in these cases. The NCAA and its member schools have already made billions off of unpaid players, and peddling video game rights to make a little bit more money off of them is greed at its finest. It has always been obvious that the avatars in the game were exact replicas of the players, just with their names omitted. Perhaps they never thought the players would fight back.

Toledo to consider alcohol sales at football games

Toledo is the latest school to study the financial benefits of adding beer and wine sales to its concession stands during football and basketball games.
Athletic director Mike O’Brien announced this week that school officials would explore the financial opportunities of adding alcohol sales for all of its of age guests. Previously, alcohol was only available in the press tower at the Glass Bowl and in the suite area in Savage Arena.
If Toledo does add alcohol sales, it would be the 12th college football stadium and 23rd stadium that houses college football to attempt to make money off booze, according to the Toledo Blade.
Minnesota reported in March that it lost more than $900,000 in sales last year thanks to start-up costs with its vendors, equipment and extra security. However, Minnesota is confident that it can recoup those costs this year because a lot of their expenses were due to one-time expenses.
Currently, three other Mid-American Conference schools sell alcohol at sporting events — Bowling Green, Akron and Kent State.

Columnist thinks ‘Joebots’ might drive Bill O’Brien out of Penn State

The dynamic at Penn State is among the most interesting in college football.
We touched on it last week as Sports Illustrated wrote an expose on Penn State making changes in its medical staff, a story that didn’t seem as salacious as it was presented to be but still left coach Bill O’Brien answering to it in an angry and frustrated 22-minute teleconference. It also left us wondering if at some point this drama, possibly brought about due to a chasm between the old guard at Penn State and the new era, could mean O’Brien starts thinking about NFL jobs sooner rather than later.
In a very well thought out and insightful piece, David Jones of the Patriot-News wrote that he thinks “a group of self-appointed experts and charlatans feeding off them” championing the cause of whether Joe Paterno was treated unfairly could be in the process of driving O’Brien out of Penn State.
Jones also introduces a word for that group that probably will have some legs: “Joebots.”
Jones paints a picture of O’Brien as a coach who wants to focus solely on football having to regularly stamp out brush fires from various off-field issues, and Jones wonders is the fan base is completely behind O’Brien. Jones also writes about Jay Paterno taking what he perceived to be a shot at O’Brien during an interview with CBSSports.com:
“When they fired Joe, I think they [the university] were going to make it very tough for themselves to go out and get some of the head coaches they were going to get. There was a lot of, like, ‘You fired Joe? What chance do I have?”
It’s an interesting piece, and an interesting subject. The current Penn State situation is unique given the lofty place Penn State’s program has in college football history, the horrible scandal, the awkward removal of a legendary coach and the harsh sanctions.
O’Brien and his future at Penn State is one of the more interesting subplots to it all.

Michigan brands new footballs: ‘Made in USA, Not in Ohio’ (Photo)

As if the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry couldn’t get anymore ridiculous — the schools won’t even refer to each other by their correct names — Michigan has taken it to a whole new level.

Wide receiver Bo Dever posted a photo of the Wolverines new footballs and while they are made in the USA (wooo, patriotism), they are not manufactured in Ohio. See, it says so on the ball. Because a Michigan man would never, ever be caught playing with a football that was produced in that God forsaken state… Or so I’m told.
Personally, I’m not above finding this sort of pettiness between “The School Up North” and “Ohio” entertaining. Branding footballs is mildly ridiculous, but it will no doubt solicit an equally ridiculous reaction from Ohio State.

Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen spent lunch peddling food at Culvers

What’s the best way for a new coach to introduce himself to fans? Well, hand delivering them their favorite fast food might be a good start.
New Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen spent his lunch hour working at Culvers. Anderson took a special interest in a fan whose car was sporting a Minnesota Gophers sticker. According to @BadgerFootball, the man told Andersen it was his sister’s car.
Anderson even tried his hand at the grill.

Vanderbilt OL coach Herb Hand harrassed on Twitter by Tennessee fan then rats him out to Butch Jones
Vanderbilt offensive line coach Herb Hand is one of the nicest and most approachable coaches on Twitter, but even he’s not immune to stupid fans.
Monday, Hand was verbally attacked on Twitter by a Tennessee fan who goes by the Twitter handle @JulianBucio (thanks to coachingsearch.com for pointing this out).
@coachhand dude I think your wife is [expletive] someone while you coach your pathetic football team #[expletive]
Wow, stay classy Tennessee fan. Hand did nothing to provoke this comment. In fact, most of Hand’s comments on Twitter are either praising his family or talking about his latest charity effort. This is not a guy you attack.
Of course Hand didn’t just sit back and take the comment — he fired back.
“You are welcome to come to my office so we can discuss this face to face…I fully welcome the opportunity. Feel free to come by anytime so we can talk about this in person like men.”
Then he texted the message to Tennessee coach Butch Jones.

OK, we get that this is a rivalry and that words are often exchanged. Even coaches aren’t immune from getting wrapped up in it from time to time. But attacking the offensive line coach’s wife on Twitter in the middle of May is just sad and shows the world that not only are you a terrible human being, but you also have nothing better to do with your time.
My hope is that both Tennessee and Vanderbilt fans chastise this guy for being a disgrace to the Tennessee fanbase and the rivalry itself. I also hope, if he has season tickets, sad Tennessee fan is no longer allowed to attend games per a Jones request.
After Hand’s initial frustration with the situation, he calmed down and deleted the Twitter exchange. He did, however, thank those who were supporting him in a final message.

Johnny Manziel can throw the football accurately even when he’s blindfolded
Texas A&M already tried one “Is there anything Johnny Manziel can’t do?” stunt when it let the quarterback try an extra point last season. Maybe Manziel has stumbled upon another one.
Perhaps the Aggies can send out Manziel for a series or two blindfolded this season. Apparently it doesn’t affect his accuracy that much.
In a story from longtime NFL writer Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (she also tweeted the picture to the right), she explained how quarterback guru George Whitfield Jr. put Manziel through a drill in which he was blindfolded and heard a receiver clap three times so he knew where to throw.
And Manziel threw only two uncatchable passes in 29 blindfolded attempts, the report said. Wow.
So, is there anything Johnny Manziel can’t do?
“I have always said he has the best antenna in football,” Whitfield said, according to the Star-Telegram. “I think he just proved that.”
The story discusses Manziel’s desire to do something that “will never, ever be done again,” and he brings up the example of Cam Newton’s legendary 2010 season at Auburn. The story discusses Manziel’s chances of building a legacy as the greatest college football player ever. That’s a possible, especially if he wins a second straight Heisman Trophy.
If he needs anything else to add to his legend, he can always show off his blindfolded skills.

Oklahoma football affected by tornado, and reaching out to help

In the aftermath of the devastation from the tornado that hit Moore, Okla., it isn’t surprising that Oklahoma’s football program is already reaching out to help.
Moore is only about 10 miles from Norman. The tornado affected two members of the Sooners staff personally, as they had homes that were destroyed in the disaster, ESPN reported:
Bob Stoops, on @sportscenter: One graduate assistant, one strength coach had home destroyed in Moore tornado. No players/players’ families.
— SoonerNation (@Sooner_Nation) May 21, 2013
The Sooner football program is already helping as it can, and we’re sure it and the other college football programs in the state will be doing much more to help the people of Moore when it becomes clear what is needed.
Please send donations to:OU equipment room180 W Brooks Norman OK 73019We will distribute to those in need Thanks #PrayersForOK — OU Equipment (@ouequipment) May 21, 2013
Oklahoma also used its Twitter feed to send out information about donating to help the victims, by texting REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10, or going to RedCross.org. The Sooners also tweeted out a message of support from coach Bob Stoops.
Coach Stoops: “I”m thinking of so many families who are devastated. It will be a long-term effort to get people back on their feet.”
— Oklahoma Football (@OU_Football) May 21, 2013
It shouldn’t be a surprise that Oklahoma football is already expressing its concern. Stoops runs a classy program, and it’s a good bet Oklahoma and other programs will help (Oklahoma State’s official Facebook page sent out links to guide people on how and where to donate, with the message, “The Cowboy Family is here to support you & lift you up during this difficult time”) the same way Alabama’s football program helped after tornadoes there. Stoops, who said he watched the tornado from his back window when it was about a mile away according to NewsOK.com, went to visit families from Moore who were displaced to the University of Oklahoma. One of the pictures of Stoops visiting families, which were posted to Oklahoma athletics’ Facebook page, is on the top of the post and here are a couple more:

Like everyone else, our prayers go out to the people of Moore, who are dealing with an unspeakable tragedy.

Brandon Mitchell lands at N.C. State, gives Wolfpack another quarterback option

N.C. State has a pretty big hole at quarterback with Mike Glennon off to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but now has another candidate to replace him.
Brandon Mitchell, who left Arkansas after it was apparent he had been beaten out by Brandon Allen for the starting quarterback job, is transferring to N.C. State, according to ESPN. He’s on track to graduate and can play in the fall.
That should help the Wolfpack, although it’s hard to tell what Mitchell will really bring to the team.
Mitchell hasn’t played much. He’s just 25-of-43 for 332 yards in his career. He played behind Tyler Wilson (no shame there) and moved to receiver last year to help the team, which makes it even harder to tell how he’ll do at quarterback this fall. Although, Ryan Tannehill moved from receiver to full-time quarterback at Texas A&M and did just fine.
Mitchell will compete with Pete Thomas, who has been highly touted for a while but wasn’t impressive at Colorado State before transferring, and sophomore Manny Stocker. While it remains to be seen if Mitchell can come right in and help at quarterback, it won’t hurt the Wolfpack to have another option.

Urban Meyer and Dan Mullen palling around at a Jimmy Buffet concert (Photo)

Urban Meyer loves college football. After all, he only stayed retired from the game for less than a year.
But there is one thing that knocks his coveted profession of its pedestal — his unbridled love of Jimmy Buffet.
Busted Coverage found a photo of Meyer and Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen palling around at a Buffet concert in Atlanta in April. Mullen and Meyer have been close friends and colleagues since the late 90s when they worked together at Notre Dame. They were also together at Bowling Green, Utah and won a couple national championships at Florida.
Apparently, Meyer tries to take in a Buffet concert yearly around his birthday in July. When he coached at Florida, he told the Tampa Bay Times that Buffet had a standing invitation to join the team on the sideline. Buffet actually took him up on the offer for a 56-6 win over South Carolina in 2008.
It’s probably easier to blast “Margaritaville” on a fall Florida day than a snowy one in Columbus, Ohio.

Teddy Bridgewater tells Louisville he doesn’t want Heisman campaign, wants focus on team

Heisman Trophy campaigns by schools don’t make sense, or at least they shouldn’t.
Voters shouldn’t be swayed by football cards or billboards or other kooky items (Kansas State sent out band-aids to pump up Collin Klein’s candidacy last year). They should be swayed by watching players, analyzing numbers and making correct decisions on who to vote for. Anyone who needs a promotional item mailed to them to know who to vote for the Heisman Trophy shouldn’t have a ballot. But, the campaigns for individuals roll on anyway.
Just not at Louisville this year.
Cardinals quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who is one of the best players in college football, told Louisville he does not want a Heisman campaign, according to WDRB.com.
Bridgewater probably wasn’t aware that he boosted his reputation a bit among smart Heisman voters with that request.
The report from WDRB said the reason Bridgewater asked Louisville to skip any Heisman campaign is he wants any promotion to focus on the team as a whole, not him. Bridgewater had said earlier this offseason he didn’t mind a Heisman campaign, but thought better of it and told the coaches he didn’t want one.
“He wanted it to be about team and if we won as a team individual recognition would come anyway,” Louisville sports information director Rocco Gasparro said to WDRB. “It says a lot about the character of Teddy, I think, and how much his team means to him.”
There’s nothing wrong with a player not calling off a Heisman campaign (just something wrong with any voters who need it to guide their decision). But Bridgewater’s team-first approach, especially considering Bridgewater won’t be on television as much as Heisman candidates from more high-profile conferences, is admirable. It’s a great indication of what kind of leader he is. NFL teams will certainly notice that too.
In the end, Bridgewater won’t get as much manufactured publicity, but his reputation will probably grow among those who are paying attention.
“I’m all about this team,” Bridgewater told WDRB. “I’m all about the team having success. I’m all about my teammates becoming better players. The Heisman isn’t a goal of mine. A team effort, a national championship, a BCS game, those are our goals.”

Recruit Matt Sokol receives a handwritten note from Michigan State coaches after his commitment

This offseason – or recruiting season, if you will – we’ve seen coaches from various schools (mostly Mississippi State) send recruits ridiculous letters in an attempt to get them to commit to their program.
That’s why it gives us great pleasure to highlight Michigan State, which celebrated in-state tight end recruit Mike Sokol for giving his verbal pledge to the Spartans in a normal manner.
There was no ridiculous propaganda, no offers or Swag soda or calling the kid a “Baller,” just simple expressions of excitement in a handwritten note from several of the coaches.
“We are now a better team.” — linebackers/special teams coordinator Mike Tressel.
“Welcome Matt – We have great things in front of us here.” — offensive coordinator/running backs coach Dave Warner.
It’s always nice to see a team do something nice for a recruit even if that recruit hasn’t officially signed yet and could still be poached by Urban Meyer at Ohio State.

Doc Five: Players who could keep Johnny Manziel from another Heisman – No. 5, Jadeveon Clowney

This offseason we will count down various topics from Monday through Friday, bringing you the top five of the important and definitely some not so important issues in college football. It’s the Doc Five, every week until we will thankfully have actual games to discuss.
PLAYERS WHO COULD KEEP JOHNNY MANZIEL FROM ANOTHER HEISMAN
NO. 5, JADEVEON CLOWNEY
We’d like to put South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney higher. He’s likely the best player in college football regardless of position. Anyone who really understands football appreciates how good he is, and how he impacts games.
But let’s be honest. History says voters are incapable of giving the Heisman Trophy to a purely defensive player.
Charles Woodson would not have won the award without playing some offense and returning punts for Michigan in 1997. We don’t think Clowney will be doing either in 2013 (though he did have that catch in the spring game … ).
The first Heisman Trophy was given out in 1935, and since then there hasn’t been one winner who has played exclusively on defense. It’s literally inconceivable that through all those decades, not once was a defensive player the most outstanding in the sport over a season. But not one has ever gotten enough votes to win the Heisman.
It’s a shame. So while Clowney is probably the best player in the nation, or at least second to Johnny Manziel, ranking him higher on the list would probably be foolish. He’s not going to win the award unless he does something really special this season.
That said, if anyone is capable of something really special, it’s Clowney. His famous hit in the Outback Bowl (and the incredible season that led up to it) gives him more Heisman momentum going into a season than any defensive player has ever had. That helps.
Clowney would have to put up a statistic that forces voters to really consider him over all the quarterbacks and their easily sortable numbers. The best guess is Clowney has to hit 20 sacks for that to happen. If he can tie or break Derrick Thomas’ record of 27 sacks in a season, you’d imagine he’ll break that Heisman drought for defensive players. But that’s quite a leap considering he had just 13 last season. Sacks are hard to get and they’re not the only way to measure how good a defensive end is. Clowney could have a bigger impact, by drawing way more attention in blocking schemes and rushing quarterbacks who are well aware of his presence into bad throws, and never get close to 20 sacks. And without a milestone number, voters will be forced to judge Clowney’s candidacy on things that are hard to quantify.
We’d like Clowney to get a real shot at the Heisman Trophy. It would be a great story and long overdue proof that, yes, the best player in college football can be found on defense. And he is obviously one of the handful of players in college football this season who has a very good chance at keeping Manziel from winning his second straight Heisman Trophy. We’re just not betting on it happening, no matter how great Clowney is.

Man who claimed for years to be Ohio State All-American tight end appears to be a fraud
Giovanni Strassini had a pretty good deal going. He’d show up as a guest at functions for a Charlotte-based Ohio State fan group, he’d pose for pictures and sign autographs, and he’d talk about his exploits as an All-American tight end for the Buckeyes in the mid-1970s on Facebook.
The only problem? Well, Ohio State has never heard of Giovanni Strassini.
Of course, that’s where the story gets weird.
Strassini (or whoever he is) saw his story start to unravel on a message board thread at BuckeyePlanet.com. The posters on that site easily figured out there was no Strassini who wore No. 89 for the Buckeyes. He wasn’t the third basemen for the baseball team in that era either, as he had also claimed. He definitely didn’t score an 8-yard touchdown in the 1976 Rose Bowl, one of the more easily verifiable facts to look up. The Buckeyes’ only touchdown that day was a 3-yard touchdown run by Pete Johnson.
The Rose Bowl ring Strassini posted on Facebook didn’t look exactly like the actual Rose Bowl ring from the season he claimed it was from. And he wasn’t drafted by the Cleveland Browns either, blowing up another one of his stories.
Yet somehow, Strassini pulled this scam off for at least a couple years before anyone noticed.
His Facebook account under the name “Giova Stroh” has been deleted but here’s a screen shot from the cached page:

And here’s a Twitter account:

Here’s what Ohio State spokesman Jerry Emig said about Strassini in an email to Dr. Saturday:
I cannot find any documentation that Giovanni Strassini was ever a member of Ohio State’s football teams. I won’t go so far as to say that he wasn’t part of the team…as a walk-on for a season or two and just didn’t appear on the rosters, but the following resources were used to determine that he wasn’t listed on any Ohio State rosters.
• Rosters from official media guides from 1971-77 do not list him.
• Rose Bowl media guides for 1973 and 1974 do not list him as a member of Ohio State’s roster.
• Ohio State’s 2005-06 edition of the Varsity O – official letterman’s club – director do not list him as a letterwinner.
• We do not list anyone by that name as an All-American in any of our All-American lists.
• The list of letterman in Ohio State media guides does not list him as a letterwinner.
Other than that, though … it’s a perfect match!
There was also a Wikipedia page and an IMDB entry which had all the facts that he passed along, and even a Sporcle.com quiz on Ohio State All-Americans that lists him. The imposter was rather thorough, at least.
And there’s this humorous photo on the BuckeyePlanet.com thread from Strike City bowling alley in Charlotte, with Strassini’s pin in between signed pins of, you know, famous guys who actually played at Ohio State:

CharlotteBuckeyes.com, the fan group for Ohio State backers in North Carolina, touted his appearance at a get together for a 2012 Final Four basketball game:

Based on that, and the photo at the top of the page from the 2011 football season, Strassini was able to pull off this hoax for at least a couple years before the BuckeyePlanet.com message board posters poked some pretty easy holes in his entire story.
From the looks of it all, someone went out of their way to act like an All-American tight end from the 1976 season. So the lesson is, if someone says he was an All-American at Ohio State and scored a touchdown in the Rose Bowl, check it out before you take your picture with him.
UPDATE: A Charlotte Buckeyes member passed along an email sent to all its members acknowledging Strassini’s hoax, but said the man “did not receive any funds from our club, nor did the club enter into any agreements or contracts with this man.” The email said he “unexpectedly” attended a game watching party in 2011 and asked to be involved with the group, and was invited to another watch party during the 2012 basketball season.
The Charlotte Buckeyes group said it disassociated with him last year due to his “inappropriate communications” with some members.

Trading card of 7-year-old Nebraska spring game star, Jack Hoffman, fetches $6,100 on ebay for charity, but the bidder won’t pay

The Jack Hoffman promotional rookie card that was auctioned off to help benefit pediatric cancer research is still waiting to be claimed.
Upper Deck made a handful of promotional cards for the 7-year-old cancer patient, who scored a touchdown during Nebraska’s spring game, in an effort to raise money for Hoffman’s charity, The Team Jack Foundation. Hoffman signed four of them (three in silver and one in gold) and auctioned one of the silver signed cards on ebay.
The auction received a lot of attention and the final bid was $6,100.
Only the man who supposedly made the bid has no plans to pay up, according to Beckett.com.
Prep 2 Pro Sports owner Mike Schnoor, who is selling the cards on behalf of the Hoffman family, said efforts to contact several other bidders also have failed.
So what should have been a continuation of the heartwarming story that had touched the nation this spring has actually turned sour.
“It’s a pretty sore subject around here,” Schnoor told Beckett Media. “The guy who ended up winning said a guy logged into his account and bid on it as a joke. It goes from a great story to kind of sobering.”
Schnoor told Beckett.com he was thinking of other ways to auction the card, including relisting it as a “Buy It Now” or auctioning it off locally.
It’s just unfortunate that it’s come to this. Hopefully, Hoffman and his family won’t be too disheartened by the uncouth tactics of a few people. Hoffman’s 69-yard run in front of 60,000 people watching Nebraska’s spring game remains one of the most inspirational stories of the year.

Top cornerback recruit Jabrill Peppers also has musical talent (Video)
College football players rapping on the side is not a novel idea, but it’s rare when one of those players has actual rapping talent.
Cornerback Jabrill Peppers of Paramus (N.J.) Catholic High School is the nation’s top cornerback, according to Rivals, but he’s also an aspiring rapper. And unlike former Michigan State signee Jay Harris, who amicably parted from the school to pursue his rapping career, Peppers actually has talent.
Peppers released a music video Sunday for his new single “Don’t Take It Personal” under the rapper name of “J. Reall.” The song is a calibration with another rapper named “Knew Era.”

The music and flow are good as are the lyrics. The entire video looks professionally done and unlike Harris, Peppers doesn’t say anything that would prohibit one of his collegiate suitors from recruiting him.
Despite his musical talent, Harris appears to be making college football his priority. He’s set to choose his collegiate decision among Michigan, Penn State, LSU, Rutgers and Stanford on May 26.
Let’s hope he stays on the path of getting college education while pursuing his music.

Central Michigan to honor scholarship of incoming freshman, Derrick Nash, who is battling leukemia

Derrick Nash seemingly had everything going for him.
The Carrollton High School (Mich.) senior was the state’s top rusher with 1,967 yards and 27 touchdowns and he had a full scholarship to Central Michigan.
But in April all of that changed. Nash started to feel tired and had a high fever. He was rushed to the hospital where he learned news that no one ever wants to hear.
“I went to the emergency room, and that’s when everything broke loose,” Nash told mlive.com. “They did some blood work. My white blood cell count was three times as high as it should be, and my platelet count was three times as low as what it should be.
“It was leukemia.”
Nash began chemotherapy on May 6 and while he was worried about his health, he also was worried that his dream of becoming an FBS player would never come true.
“It was my dream come true,” Nash told mlive.com. “Playing Division I football … I never thought I would get the chance, but I was getting the chance. Signing that letter of intent was the greatest moment in my life. It was something I thought would never happen happening.”
But Central Michigan coach Dan Enos didn’t give it a second thought and told Nash not to worry about losing his scholarship and that he was welcome on campus whenever he felt up to it.
“One of the first things we told him was that he was going to play football again and that he was going to play for CMU,” Enos said. “Keeping him on scholarship was a no-brainer. It’s the right thing to do. That’s the philosophy from the president through the athletic director to the coaches. You do the right thing.”
Nash will not be able to play this season as his body recovers from chemotherapy, so he plans to take a medical redshirt. Nash hopes to start working out again and be ready to compete for playing time in 2014.
“The doctors said I’ll be able to recover,” Nash told mlive.com. “I can’t wait to get back and get to work. A couple days ago, I couldn’t stand up without getting tired. Now I’m ready to go. I’m going to work to become stronger than I was before, faster than I was before.”
Added Enos: “There is a reason you go through tough things. I am confident Derrick is going to come back to CMU and to our team tougher and stronger than before.
“I can’t wait until he can run onto our field before a game wearing a CMU uniform. That’ll be a great moment for a lot of people.”

Wyoming’s Dave Christensen uses Photoshop to explain just how fast he wants this year’s offense

Wyoming coach Dave Christensen in March decided to take over the play calling duties in the wake of offensive coordinator Gregg Brandon’s departure to New Mexico State.
In doing so, Christensen assured anyone who was listening that the 2013 Wyoming Cowboys would be the “fastest” team in the country.
We’re not talking 40 times, we’re talking amassing a lot of plays similar to the offense Christensen directed while the offensive coordinator at Missouri.
“We have been a no-huddle offense, but I felt that, in the last few years, our tempo has slowed down drastically,” Christensen told SiriusXM College Sports Nation. “It’s unacceptable for what I want to do what I have in mind as an offense. We’re trying to get back to a tempo that’s maybe a little greater than when I was at Missouri.”

To make sure there was no confusion about Christensen’s intentions, Christensen tweeted out a makeshift movie poster with his team starring in “FastNFurious 13” thus joining the ranks of coaches with a Photoshopping fetish.
Christensen, who spent 11 years as the OC at Missouri, ran 1,112 and 982 plays in his final two seasons with the program. In contrast, Oregon, which is widely considered the nation’s fastest team, ran 1,058 plays last season and ran 1,.024 in 2010 when they played for a national title.
Nevada led the Mountain West Conference in play run last year with 1,080. Wyoming ran a paltry 852, which ranked seventh in the conference.

Texas’ 2013 hype video gets remade by someone who is obviously not a Longhorns fan
So some of you chuckled a bit at the “Texas… Football… Is… Back” video last week, and perhaps rightfully so after the Longhorns had a decidedly meh 2012 season.
Well, if you were snickering at that video, you’ll have a big laugh at the response video posted by stewade on YouTube.
The intro is the same, and then the “highlights” are clips of pretty much every fumble, bumble and blooper Texas had last season. Even Longhorns fans are going to have to laugh as the pump-up music plays in the background and Texas is shown throwing a pick six.
At least we think Texas fans can get a laugh out of this video, too. Even if they don’t, it will be pretty easy to find some college football fans who will.

Alabama’s shattered BCS crystal ball trophy fetches more than $100,000 at auction
After this bit of news, every school that has a BCS crystal ball trophy will be “accidentally” knocking theirs on the ground and calling an auction to sell off the broken pieces.
Last year, Alabama’s crystal football for winning the title at the end of the 2011 season was broken. Carleton Tinker, the father of long snapper Carson Tinker, somehow knocked the ball off its stand. It fell to the floor and shattered. No big deal because insurance covered the cost to replace the trophy, which is valued at about $30,000 (keep this number in mind).
We’re sure someone at Alabama, once the football was scooped into a dustpan and put into the Crimson Tide’s most modestly priced receptacle, thought it would be funny to put the million pieces of broken glass into a bowl and sell it to the highest bidder. Maybe make a few bucks, have a laugh. Because, while it’s kind of cool and certainly unique, who would buy such a thing?
And then the shattered trophy sold for a reported $105,000, which is more than three times what the unbroken trophy is worth.
If that’s the going rate, the plate I broke on the floor this morning is headed straight to eBay.
Alabama auctions off the broken 2011 BCS Champonship Trophy at its UA Celebrity Golf Tournament on Sunday. It brought a reported $105,000.
— Cecil Hurt (@CecilHurt) May 20, 2013
That’s unbelievable. And Tinker shouldn’t feel bad about his gaffe anymore, considering it ended up being a six-figure windfall.
So if you see people at Auburn playing hot potato with their crystal ball or Les Miles punting LSU’s trophy through the football offices, you’ll know why. There’s good money in the shattered trophy market.

‘You’re a man! You’re 45!’ Mike Gundy’s rant directed at Gundy about Wes Lunt situation
There was a time when Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy cared about his quarterbacks enough to get hopped up on Red Bull and famously defend them in a shouting rant. That was pretty cool.
This week he said quarterback Wes Lunt, who began last season as a freshman starter but slipped down the depth chart after he sustained some injuries, could transfer but was given a transfer restriction list that included schools from the Big 12, SEC and Pac-12, and Southern Mississippi and Central Michigan as well. All transfer restrictions are pretty unfair, and if the NCAA cared in the slightest about student athletes it would never let broad transfer restrictions happen. But even in a world where coaches often have some rules on where a player can transfer to, that’s a pretty substantial list. If Lunt wanted to go to a restricted school he would not only have to sit out but he’d have to pay his own way for a year.
It seems rather petty and unnecessary after both sides went out of their way to say that both sides appreciated what the other did, but it was time to move on. There’s just no good reason for this.
So we grabbed a newspaper with the headline, “Coach restricts quarterback from going to whatever school he chooses for no good reason,” sat Gundy down and let him know how we felt about it:
“I’m going to talk about this article right here. If anybody hasn’t read this article — I don’t read it, but it was brought to me by a mother … of children. I think this is worth reading.
Let me tell you why I want to talk about this article. It’s all accurate, not fiction and this article embarrasses me to write about athletics tremendously. That article had to have been written about a coach that doesn’t have a child, and has never had a child that has changed their mind at 19 years old and come home from their freshman year upset! And had to fairly deal with the child when he is upset! And kick a person when he’s down!
Here’s all that Wes Lunt did: He goes to class. He is respectful to the media. He’s respectful to the public. And he’s a good kid. And he’s not a professional athlete and he doesn’t deserve to be restricted on what school he can transfer to when he’s down.
If you have a child someday, you’ll understand how it feels. But you obviously don’t have a child. I do. If your child goes to a school and somebody makes fun of him because he has a lot of potential and might not start ahead of Clint Chelf, or says he’s fat, and he comes asking to his coach to go to the school of his choice, you’d understand. But you haven’t had that. Someday you will and when your child comes home after his freshman year when he’s still young enough to regret his college decision, you’ll understand.
If you want to mess with the future an athlete for no good reason — one of your athletes! — you mess with one who doesn’t do the right things! You don’t restrict his transfer process because he does everything right and may not start on Saturday! We should not let you make that decision!
That’s why I don’t believe the NCAA’s rhetoric about caring for student athletes. Because it’s garbage! And the Oklahoma State administrator that let you restrict his college future is garbage! Restricting an amateur athlete who you’ve said left on good terms. And then you want to take care of guys who don’t do things right and downgrade them, the ones that do make plays.
Are you kidding me? Where are we at in society today? We expect more from you! You’re a man! You’re 45! You’re not a kid. Take some responsibility! Or your coaches. Don’t restrict a kid that does everything right, that’s heart is broken he isn’t the starter at Oklahoma State, and then say he can’t go to Southern Miss! That ain’t right! And then to make that decision about Wes Lunt, after you thanked him for everything he did. That’s not right!
So get your priorities straight. And I hope someday you have a child and somebody doesn’t let them choose their own college future and needlessly messes with them on a massively important life decision for no reason at all and you have to look them in the eye and say, ‘You know what? It’s OK. They are supposed to be mature adults but they’re really not.’ Who’s the kid here? Who’s the kid here? Are you kidding me? That’s all I’ve got to say. Makes me want to puke.”

Wes Lunt not allowed to transfer to Big 12, SEC or Southern Miss, in a petty move by Mike Gundy
When quarterback Wes Lunt announced he was going to transfer from Oklahoma State, both he and the school went out of their way to handle it in the classiest way possible.
Lunt thanked Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy thanked Lunt. Lunt was a highly touted recruit and was a starter to begin the 2012 season as a true freshman, but he dealt with injuries and it was time to move on. Oklahoma State had a logjam at quarterback after the spring. Everyone seemed on board with him moving on and doing what was best for his future.
That makes Oklahoma State’s subsequent significant transfer restrictions on Lunt so odd, and infuriating as well.
According to the Tulsa World, Lunt will not be allowed by Oklahoma State to transfer to a school in the Big 12, SEC or to Southern Mississippi (whose new coach, Todd Monken, was previously Oklahoma State’s offensive coordinator).
OSU confirming my tweet from two days ago that Lunt is being blocked from transferring to certain destinations — Southern Miss, SEC, Big 12
— Jimmie Tramel (@JimmieTramel) May 17, 2013
A similar report from CBSSports.com lists just SEC and Southern Mississippi on the restricted list. Derek Leonard, Lunt’s high school coach, told Channel1450.com in Springfield, Ill. that the Big 12, SEC, Southern Mississippi and Eastern Michigan were on the list.
None of it makes sense. Let’s revisit those quotes from the transfer announcement.
“We appreciate Wes and we thank him for everything he has done,” Gundy said. “He’s leaving on good terms and is making this decision based on what he thinks is best for his future.”
“This was not a decision I took lightly, but it is a decision that I felt was right for me,” Lunt said. “I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to the entire Oklahoma State University community. Specifically, I would like to thank the coaches, players, and the whole OSU football family. I wish the Cowboys the best of luck in the future.”
There are many things about college football that benefit the school and not the athletes that the NCAA laughably spends so much time saying it looks out for. In fact, almost everything is in place to benefit the schools. It’s a one-sided relationship. Blanket transfer restrictions like this are one of the more outrageous slights against young men who want to switch schools for whatever reason.
Lunt wanted to change schools because, presumably, he feels he has a bright college future ahead of him but was not going to start at Oklahoma State. That happens. It happened to Joe Flacco at Pitt. He went to Delaware and did pretty well for himself. One would presume when Gundy was flirting with Tennessee about its opening this offseason that he had legitimate reasons, whether it be for his family or career, for looking into a change. Nobody blocked him from talking to any school, even while under contract. That’s fair. Well, fair for those few in college athletics who are making millions. Not fair, apparently, for the unpaid labor of college football.
Unless there’s more to the story – and go back and look at the quotes, it would make no sense for Gundy to lie in public comments he didn’t need to make, say “he’s leaving on good terms” and hurt his credibility – there’s no reason to be so restrictive for Lunt. He’s a young man who could have a bright and lucrative future. Gundy is making it harder for Lunt to seek out the type of college football career that he wants, and get the college education at the institution he desires. It’s an unnecessary power trip that could have a significant negative impact on a 19-year-old’s life.
This is college athletics at its most ridiculous, petty and hypocritical. It needs to be changed.

Nick Saban seems genuinely hurt by Tim Davis’ ‘devil’ remark
Mostly, we think of Alabama’s Nick Saban as a football coaching robot. And he plays it up many times.
There are always those weird attempts by certain media outlets to portray him as a normal happy-go-lucky guy, and Saban awkwardly grits his teeth and gets through it. Then he’ll answer another question about how he refuses to take any days off or sit through another feature on how he didn’t smile through the Gatorade bath at the title game, and move on.
He’s not a secretly joyous practical joker. He’s a focused, intense individual. That’s how he presents himself in just about every setting. It works for him and his profession. But, this week we are seeing a bit of his human side.
Florida assistant Tim Davis referred to Saban, who he worked under for three years, as “the devil himself.” And even though Saban never likes to show emotions, having a former assistant say that clearly hurt him.
“It’s just disappointing,” Saban said, according to The Sports Xchange. “If somebody has a problem with me, I’d appreciate it if they’d tell me. If I’m doing something to offense somebody, I’d certainly like to do whatever I have to do to fix it. It’s not our intention. It’s not what we try to do. We’re in a tough business. It’s very competitive. Sometimes you’ve got to demand that people do things that maybe they don’t want to do, but it’s not personal.”
Saban appeared on the Dan Patrick Show on Friday and again expressed disappointment that a former assistant would say something like that about him.
Nick Saban on @dpshow “Everybody always remembers the way you make them feel.”

Nick Saban on @dpshow “I’d rather not be humorous at the expense of someone else. That’s just me.” — Pete Roussel (@coachingsearch) May 17, 2013
So now we know that while Saban comes off as unfeeling, there are some lines not to cross with him.

Longhorns great Vince Young graduates from University of Texas
Since finishing one of the greatest college football careers of the past couple decades, Vince Young has been a bit of a lightning rod.
He started his NFL career in a promising way, winning the NFL offensive rookie of the year award. And it never really got much better after that. Due to some admitted immaturity, Young clashed with Titans coach Jeff Fisher, and his departure from the Titans was messy. His most memorable moment during his season in Philadelphia was a regrettable “dream team” comment, and he was cut by Buffalo before last season started. He’s still trying to make a comeback but hasn’t gotten a team to give him a chance yet.
But whatever has happened with Vince Young since he left Texas, he’s providing a good example for all college football players. One day before his 30th birthday, Young will walk across the stage and graduate from the University of Texas.
About to get this workout in before my big graduation day thanks for everyone who supported me through the good and bad. HookEm
— Vince Young (@VinceYoung) May 17, 2013
Young had a heck of a football career at Texas, including a starring role in one of the sport’s all-time great games, the national title win against USC. But he told CBSSports.com that graduating tops all of that.
“This will rank No. 1 because it is what I came to school for,” Young told CBSSports.com. “I came here to get an education, and to win a national championship. And now, I get to put that smile on my mom’s face.”
Young should be proud to graduate on Friday. Through all his ups and downs in football the past few years, coming back and earning his degree is an accomplishment that other former players should take note of.

Johnny Manziel’s world tour continues with his batting practice home run before Padres game

We shouldn’t be all that surprised when an elite athlete performs a feat in another sport that most people aren’t capable of.
Still, seeing Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel hit a batting practice home run before a Padres game at Petco Park (which, by the way, has the reputation of being the toughest park in the big leagues to hit home runs) is pretty remarkable.
Johnny Football might just be Johnny Everything.
Here’s the video of Manziel’s home run, from the Twitter feed of his quarterbacks coach George Whitfield Jr.:
That’s a pretty sweet swing from Texas A&M’s quarterback. It makes sense that he’d be able to uncoil on a baseball like that, considering how well he can contort his body and throw from odd angles. Also, he was apparently a pretty good baseball player in high school.
All that said, it still makes you shake your head that a quarterback hit one over the fence in a major league ballpark. (Though there is some dispute on Whitfield’s claim that he hit it out, as CBSSports.com said he hit one off the wall.)
Also, ever the showman, Manziel reenacted his “bobble touchdown” against Alabama on the ceremonial first pitch before the game, fumbling the ball up in the air, catching it and rolling left to throw it to Mark Kotsay, who caught it behind his back.
And just in case you needed more proof he’s The Most Interesting Quarterback in the World, Manziel also got a pretty cool personalized jersey with a Heisman Trophy patch on the arm (h/t to Uni Watch):

Doc Five: College football players turned famous actors – No. 2, Ed O’Neill, Youngstown State

This offseason we will count down various topics from Monday through Friday, bringing you the top five of the important and definitely some not so important issues in college football. It’s the Doc Five, every week until we will thankfully have actual games to discuss.
BEFORE THEY WERE FAMOUS: ACTORS WHO PLAYED COLLEGE FOOTBALL
No. 2 – Ed O’Neill
If you ever watched the television hit “Married… With Children,” you might recall main character Al Bundy recounting his exploits as a star high school football player at Polk High.
You know, all-city, four touchdowns in one game.
Well, the man who played Bundy, Ed O’Neill, wasn’t fibbing about his football career, which extended far beyond high school to a brief stint in the NFL.
O’Neill earned a scholarship to Ohio University, played there a couple years before transferring back to his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio and to Youngstown State. He was a defensive lineman for the Penguins in 1967 and 1968 and was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1969.
But like Bundy, O’Neill’s football fame was fleeting. The Steelers cut him in training camp and he wasn’t signed by another team.
So, O’Neill decided to pursue other interests. Unlike some of the other college football players turned actors on this list, O’Neill didn’t immediately go into acting. Even though he acted in high school and dabbled in it in college, he wasn’t sure that was his calling. So he spent some time teaching before finally deciding to move to New York to pursue acting at 30 years old in 1977.
All of O’Neill’s early credits come from the stage, but his first big television break was his 10-year stint on “Married… With Children” that began in 1987. O’Neill went on to star in movies such as “The Bone Collector,” “Dutch” and “Little Giants”. He had also had small parts in “Wayne’s World” and “Wayne’s World 2.”
He was also a reoccurring character on NBC’s “West Wing.”
However, most people now know O’Neill as patriarch Jay Pitchett in the hit comedy “Modern Family.” Pritchett was a quarterback in his college years and now enjoys watching the sport.
Stay tuned Friday for the top Doc 5 former college football player turned actor. The result might surprise you. And spoiler alert, it’s not O.J.

Eastern Michigan’s Ron English will jump out of a plane with you if you’ll help pay for new bathrooms
Eastern Michigan coach Ron English needs $60,000 to renovate the bathrooms in his team’s locker room, and he’s willing to fall out of a plane with you to get it.
Eastern Michigan has started a campaign called “#TimetoFly” to help renovate player’s and coaches’ locker rooms and bathrooms, player’s lounge, equipment room, weight room and team building and training room.
While Eastern Michigan is offering a host of football-related opportunities for people who make donations, including listening to a pregame speech and running out of the tunnel with the team, jumping out of a plane with English appears to be the most lucrative.
“For three people, for a $5,000 price, we would ride down there, we’d meet in my office, we’d talk a little bit of football, watch a little bit of videotape, then we’d drive down there for about an hour, hour and a half, we’d go through the training together and then we’d fly up in that airplane and jump out,” English says in the promotional video on the team’s website. “If you’ve never skydived before, you’ll love it.”

English speaks from experience. A couple years ago, he went skydiving with the U.S. Army Golden Knights. As an aside, Eastern Michigan confirms that that is not Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez in tandem with English; just a member of the Golden Knights staff, who happens to bear a similar resemblance.
Now, imagine yourself strapped to Ron English for a 5-minute fall.
So, if you’re willing to put your life in English’s hands and you’re eager to get rid of $5,000, this might be the perfect opportunity for a Sunday afternoon.

UNC coach Larry Fedora defends decision to give team championship rings

North Carolina coach Larry Fedora said this week he expected backlash over his decision to give his team ACC Coastal Division championship rings even though the Tar Heels didn’t win the title thanks to NCAA sanctions that made them ineligible for the postseason.
Georgia Tech was the Coastal Division, according to the ACC, and played in the conference title game.
“I knew there would be but that’s not why it was done,” Fedora said of the criticism. “I didn’t do it for the backlash. It was done for those seniors and those kids that accomplished everything they could accomplish. They had nothing to do with what happened so they were paying the price. I felt like they deserved it.”
Fedora and his players were serving ACC sanctions for violations no one on the current team or staff had any involvement in committing. The team knew at the beginning of the season that it had no postseason opportunity, but still managed to win their division.
Fedora thought that effort deserved to be recognized.
“I was searching for any reward that I could give them because I was proud of what they did,” he said.

Johnny Manziel battles waves as he works toward his next Heisman (Photo)

For all you young quarterbacks out there aspiring to be a Heisman Trophy winner, find yourself a good beach, a good trainer and some waves.
Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy, posted a picture on Instagram of his beach workout with trainer George Whitfield in California. It can’t be easy to keep your balance and your concentration with a wave bearing down on you.
[Related: Johnny Manziel takes world tour to Padres game]
This is the second consecutive season Manziel is working with Whitfield. Makes sense, since last year’s workouts took him from spring backup to Heisman winner.
After watching Manziel’s performance last year, it’s easy to see how this particular drill played into Manziel’s success. During his 43 regular season touchdowns, there were multiple instances where Manziel used exceptional balance to either break tackles and run for scores, or escape defenders to find his receivers downfield.
Incredible beach workout this AM with @jmanziel2 with a visit from ‘The Voice of College Football’ @kirkherbstreit twitter.com/georgewhitfiel…
— George Whitfield Jr. (@georgewhitfield) May 16, 2013
Manziel’s workouts have become popular. Whitfield posted pics on his Instagram of several younger quarterbacks doing similar drills and ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit was also on the beach, no doubt gathering intel for a College Football Gameday piece.
