Big East Notebook For 10-18-2006

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are 6-0 for the first time in 30 years.

And the betting lines still haven't given them any respect.

Rutgers was a 3-point dog going into Saturday's game with rush-heavy Navy. After knocking Midshipmen quarterback Brian Hampton from the game, the Scarlet Knights went on to rout Navy 34-0.

This week the 19th-ranked Scarlet Knights have been disrespected as 6.5-point dogs on WagerWeb.com at unranked Pittsburgh.

About the only place Greg Schiano's team is getting respect is the only place it matters --in the BCS standings. The computer rankings have Rutgers as the ninth-best team in the country, which has them sitting 16th in the BCS.

What should be getting the Scarlet Knights respect is their defense, which ranks second in the nation in total yards allowed. Rutgers gives up just 221 yards per game.

Brohm Sighting: Despite throwing for 324 yards in Saturday's 23-17 win against Cincinnati, Louisville QB Brian Brohm didn't have a problem-free return from injury. Brohm floated a couple of throws and put his team in jeopardy with a fourth-quarter interception. It's good he got to kick off the rust last week and will again this week at Syracuse, because on Nov. 2 the Cardinals play their BCS championship knockout game against West Virginia.

Heisman White-Out: The Heisman candidacy of West Virginia's Steve Slaton was upstaged by teammate (and best friend) Pat White, who ran for 235 yards and 3 TDs in the Mountaineers' 41-17 victory over Syracuse. White broke his own Big East record for rushing yards by a quarterback and set the fourth-highest total by any West Virginia runner in school history. It was West Virginia's 13th victory in a row, which also matched a school record set in 1952-1953.

A Look Ahead: The big matchup in the Big East comes from undefeated Rutgers and 6-1 Pittsburgh.... West Virginia is a 22-point favorite on WagerWeb.com at Connecticut....  Louisville is a big favorite (-17) against Syracuse.... South Florida tries to extend its two-game winning streak, playing at Cincinnati (-1.5) in a rare Sunday night game with the NFL taking the night off due to the World Series.
