Pac-10 Notebook For 10-19-2006

Jeff Tedford's next job won't be as a politician.

Two years ago, his Cal Bears were all but Rose Bowl-bound until Texas head coach Mack Brown publicly begged for the spot. In the meantime, Tedford said he would stay out of the mess and let it all fall into place.

It turned out that Brown received the votes his Longhorns needed to send them to Pasadena, which sent the Golden Bears to the Holiday Bowl, where they were waxed by Texas Tech.

With the addition of a fifth BCS bowl game, it appears the Bears are BCS-bound this season barring some type of colossal collapse. Of their remaining opponents, all but USC are unranked and three of the four games are in Berkeley.

Cal was the last team to beat USC in the regular season. Do the Bears have a shot to do it again?
All Tedford has been talking about is taking each game "one game at a time"so that the Bears don't "stub their toe."

California hosts Tyrone Willingham's Washington Huskies, who are without their injured playmaker, QB Isaiah Stanback, who has thrown for 10 TDs and rushed for 3 this season.

Cal is favored by 23.5 on WagerWeb.com.

NON-TROJAN-ESQUE: USC hasn't won any of its past three games by more than a touchdown; should this be cause for concern in USC land? "This is a different year, and this is a different team," Trojans coach Pete Carroll told The Associated Press. "I think we're fortunate to be 6-0. It's really hard to win. How many teams have won all their games? We're really, really young."The Trojans must figure out all the kinks before Nov. 11, when they begin a three-week stretch with three different teams in the top 16.

BEAVER DEFENSE: Oregon State hasn't given up a fourth quarter touchdown in the past four games. While that statistic may be good, the one that matters, the Beavers' 2-2 record in the past four games, isn't that great. The Beavers rank third in the Pac-10 in total defense. In the second half of OSU's 27-17 win over Washington, the defense allowed only 77 yards. The Beavers head to Arizona for a night game with the Wildcats on Saturday as 2.5-point favorites on WagerWeb.com.

A LOOK AHEAD: UCLA heads to South Bend to represent the Pac-10 against Notre Dame, with the Irish nearly two-touchdown favorites. To make matters worse for UCLA, Patrick Cowan, the QB filling in for injured Ben Olson, got punched in the throat in the Bruins' loss to Oregon and was under doctor's orders not to talk on Monday. ...  Oregon (-3.5) plays Washington State looking to stay on the heels of Cal and USC. ...  After Arizona State scared USC, the Sun Devils play Stanford and are favored by 22.5.
