All non-Top 25 contests--that's
what we do every Friday. Last week it wasn't the greatest week, but it was our fifth
consecutive winning one. We haven't gone 5-0 in quite some time ... let's do it this
week.
Miami at Duke
WagerWeb.com line: Miami -17.5
Thirteen Hurricane players were suspended in the aftermath of "The Brawl."
The betting line suffered a little bit from this. Despite this, "Thug U" still
has talent on the field, including a quarterback who generally eats up weak opponents
in Kyle Wright. Last year, Miami won 52-7 at home. Don't look for any homefield
advantage at Duke as the Blue Devils are 0-2 ATS this year at home. Look for a big win for
the Hurricanes, but still, nobody will forget what happened last week after that
particular extra point.
Pick: Miami
Stanford at Arizona State
WagerWeb.com line: ASU -23
Stanford is 0-7 overall, 1-6 ATS this year and is without starting QB Trent Edwards,
who will likely miss the rest of the season. However, in the last five meetings, Stanford
is 5-0 ATS vs. the Sun Devils. All good streaks have to come to an end. Stanford will
struggle to put up points, and Arizona State's Rudy Carpenter is primed to have a big game
at home. ASU is 6-4 ATS in its past 10 home games.
Pick: Arizona State
Texas Tech at Iowa State
WagerWeb.com line: Texas Tech -2
Both teams are bad, but the Cyclones have a bad record because of their horrendous
schedule. The past four Division I-A teams Iowa State has played have been ranked in the
Top 25. Texas Tech goes to Ames after a disappointing performance, only putting up six
points in a loss at Colorado. Iowa State was 4-1 ATS at home in 2005. Dan McCarney is
on the hot seat, and his team will show up against the Red Raiders.
Pick: ISU
Marshall at UAB
WagerWeb.com line: UAB -5.5
Once again, both teams are bad--but one team has to win. Marshall is on the same level
as Stanford and Temple. In fact, the Thundering Herd haven't won a game against a Division
I-A opponent this season. UAB is 2-4 ATS and comes off a one-point loss against Rice on
the road. The Blazers are 3-1 straight up at home this year, and five points isn't tough
to cover. In conference play, UAB will step up and win by two scores.
Pick: UAB
Michigan State at Northwestern
WagerWeb.com line: MSU -7.5
The past two weeks we've bet against Northwestern, and the past two weeks we've come
up big. Northwestern hasn't covered the spread since an opening game win against Miami of
Ohio (which won its first game last week). Michigan State is 3-1 ATS in the past four
contests against the Wildcats. Look for Spartans QB Drew Stanton to have a big game. MSU's
four-game losing streak ends here for Coach John L. Smith, as he'll have one week to
celebrate because at the end of the season he most likely will be searching for a new job.
Pick: MSU
Last Week: 3-2
Overall: 17-8
