This is where you find out if John
Parker Wilson is for real.
The sophomore quarterback for Alabama is 5-2 as a starter heading into today's conference
clash with Tennessee. WagerWeb.com has the Vols as 10.5-point favorite.
Bama needs to pull the upset and can.
If the Tide lose, they fall to 5-3 and face two must-win games against Florida
International and Mississippi State. Alabama should win those two games, but the final two
at LSU and home against Auburn could result in losses.
If that's the case, seven wins are the most Alabama can have and that means a mediocre
bowl.
That's where Wilson comes in.
Wilson has seven consecutive 200-yard passing games in 2006 and has thrown for 1,579 yards
with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions.
"Overall, I've been pleased with his performance," Alabama coach Mike Shula
said. "He's done a good job for us. He's made some mistakes, but he's making
progress. Considering he's starting this season for the first time, he's doing very well.
Of course, he's got a big test this week taking on Tennessee on the road."
Wilson does have the offensive weapons to help him in receiver D.J. Hall and running back
Kenneth Darby.
If Darby, especially, has a strong game, it takes pressure off Wilson and maybe, just
maybe, Alabama can pull the upset today.
Auburn: Running back Kenny Irons is having a strong season. He's second in the SEC
in rushing yards per game at 96.8. And over the past 16 games, he has surpassed 100 yards
10 times. Irons ranks 15th in school history with 1,874 career yards and needs
just 126 more, something that's obtainable against Tulane today, to become the 12th
back in Auburn history to rush for 2,000 yards in a career. Tulane has no chance to stop
Irons. The Green Wave are 31-point underdogs on WagerWeb.com
Vanderbilt: South Carolina is the 3.5-point favorite against Vandy in this contest
on WagerWeb.com, but look for the Commodores to maybe steal one. In the series, South
Carolina leads 13-2. The last victory for Vandy was in 1999. The reason a possible upset
is brought up is because Vanderbilt upset Georgia last week. The Commodores won a home
game against a ranked opponent at home for the first time in 70 years.
LSU: If the Tigers had played Fresno State last year or the prior season, trouble
may have been on the way Saturday. But Fresno State is struggling right now, and LSU
should have no problems, as evidenced by the 33-point spread on WagerWeb.com. LSU is 21-1
against the WAC, and Fresno State has lost five consecutive games since a
season-opening win against Nevada.
