With USC destroying Notre Dame on
Saturday, the chances of a Ohio State-Michigan rematch in the BCS title game looks slim.
So with only a week remaining, it's time to look at the potential bowl games and what may
be some early odds at WagerWeb.com
Remember this is only hypothetical, the real bowl matchups won't be announced until next
week.
BCS National Championship Game, Jan. 8 at Glendale, Ariz.
Ohio State vs USC
The Buckeyes are definitely the favorites if this game is played. Ohio State -7 is my
predication. But the points might be attractive to USC bettors considering Pete Carroll
has had some practice getting teams ready for a title game. The fact that Ohio State will
not have played in six weeks also plays into the equation.
FIESTA BOWL, Jan. 1, Glendale, Ariz.
Boise State vs. LSU or Oklahoma
Boise State becomes only the second non-BCS team to make the party, and the Broncos will
be a natural to travel south. Personally, a Boise State-Rutgers clash would make for an
interesting game. An East vs. West clash. Boise will be an underdog to whatever team it
faces.
SUGAR BOWL, Jan. 3, New Orleans
Arkansas vs. Notre Dame
You're thinking, What happened to Florida? Well, the Gators are going to get
upset by the Razorbacks this week in the SEC Championship Game. The Gators have had too
many close calls. And they won't have an answer for Darren McFadden. So back to the Sugar,
where Arkansas will be a slight 3-point favorite over the Irish.
ROSE BOWL, Jan. 1, Pasadena, Calif.
Michigan vs. Florida
A Michigan/Notre Dame rematch is possible. But who wouldn't want to see a Florida-Michigan
matchup? This could have been a national title game. Gators fans won't be happy about
losing two games in a row. Michigan would destroy them. Wolverines would be likely 6-point
favorites.
ORANGE BOWL, Jan. 2. Miami
Wake Forest vs. Louisville.
This tells you that I like the Demon Deacons this week against Georgia Tech in the ACC
title game. Wake Forest is one of those teams of destiny. Louisville will win the Big
East. The Cardinals would be considered the favorites against either Wake Forest or
Georgia Tech. Considering Louisville lost Michael Bush in the first game of the season, it
deserves a BCS bid.
Other intriguing matchups
OUTBACK BOWL, Jan. 1, Tampa
Penn State vs. Tennessee
Could this be Joe Paterno's final game? Don't think so. Not even a broken leg can keep him
down. JoePa will be at Penn State until he dies, and no one is better at getting his team
ready for a bowl game.
COTTON BOWL, Jan. 1, Dallas
Nebraska vs. Auburn
This is one game I'd like to watch. A classic smash-mouth contest. Auburn should
have been better this year; RB Kenny Irons' injury must be more severe than first
reported. Bill Callahan has Nebraska going in the right direction, and the Cornhuskers
could pull an upset over Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship Game.
MPC COMPUTERS, Dec. 31, in Boise
Nevada vs. Miami (Fla.)
Wow, in five years Larry Coker took the Hurricanes from a national championship to Boise
and the blue field. No wonder he's gone. Miami might have a tough time beating Nevada.
TEXAS BOWL, Dec. 28, Houston
Rutgers vs, Missouri
Greg Schiano says he's staying at Rutgers and not heading to Miami. But when he realizes
that heading to Houston is the best it's ever going to get at Rutgers, he'll rethink his
decision about going to South Beach. If Schiano doesn't take Miami job, look for Barry
Alvarez to get the nod. Miami needs a big name.
EMERALD BOWL, Dec. 27, in San Francisco
Florida State vs. Arizona State
Well, it's kind of like Dorothy going to the Emerald City to see the Wizard. Florida State
needs some kind of magic. At least the house fell on the wicked witch better known as
offensive coordinator Jeff Bowden.
